SCAM ALERT π¨
A winter fuel payment scam is currently doing the rounds via a spurious text message, falsely claiming people are eligible for a payment and directing them to click a link to apply.
These messages are designed to steal personal and financial information, including your debit card details!
The Winter Fuel Payment is usually issued automatically to those who qualify, and there's no need to apply through links.
The text message will look something like this:
"DWP Service Centre: You have not yet completed your application for an energy subsidy for 2024-2025. The subsidy is Β£300. It is important that you submit your application by 17 July. Late applications will not be processed.

(Please reply βyesβ and then exit the text message and re-open to activate the link, or copy the link and open it in your browser)."
Just delete the message!
An Appeal π
We currently need someone to take over the role of Secretary on the committee.
The job entails: Supporting the Chair in ensuring the smooth running of the committee by dealing with all correspondence and its circulation to committee members; Ensuring meetings are effectively organised and minuted; Preparing and submitting the Annual Report to the Charities Commission.
For more information, please email: chair@u3aleeds.com.
Jo Turner, who is the Groups Coordinator and the CYGnet Coordinator (Neighbouring u3a Liaison), must stand down next year. These are two separate roles. We are, therefore, also looking to fill these positions.
For more information, please email: groups@u3aleeds.com.
Any members interested will be supported by a comprehensive mentoring system, if needed.
An Ideaβ¦π€
Do you know someone who could be lonely, left out or socially disconnected? It could be a neighbour, someone down the club or a friend-of-a-friend, etc.
Why not reach out and try to get them involved in Leeds u3a?
Just an idea.
For more details as to how Leeds members are affected, email our CYGnet Coordinator, Jo Turner:
Hello everyone,
Did you know that it can be fun being on our u3a Leeds Committee? Will you consider joining us?
Being on the Committee would help you influence specific events and how we run things for the benefit of our members. Our membership numbers have grown considerably over the last two years and we have space for quite a few new committee people.
The Committee meets more or less once a month, but some months we do not need to meet and we have a little holiday!
Open to all our members, but we would especially welcome those who are just into their retirement. As long as you have the ability to use email, you can cope with our communication requirements, so please consider the matter.
In the first instance, please speak to any Committee member, including me.
Thank you for your attention,
Jo (Josephine) Turner
Scam Alert π¨
We have been contacted by a u3a who experienced a scam in which they received an email, allegedly from one of their committee members, saying that they needed to be sent money in order to send an invoice.
This was quite sophisticated and appeared to have come from another committee member.
If you receive an email like this, check the email address of the sender to make sure it is their normal email address.
If in doubt, it is best to call the person directly. All u3as are recommended to implement dual authorisation for payments.
